Jesus Prayed

Carefully placed words can grab our attention and cause us to think. Luke was good at that. Both he and Matthew recorded the baptism of Jesus. Matthew gives the most detail including a conversation between John and Jesus. Luke’s contribution is subtle. “Now when all the people were baptized, and when Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, the heavens were opened…” “Was praying” is the surprise. Did the Holy Spirit descend as a response to His baptism or to His prayer? Maybe the answer doesn’t matter that much, but Luke wants us to know that Jesus was talking to the Father all the time. He mentions those prayers that occurred at critical times in Jesus’
ministry. We don’t know what Jesus prayed, but we do get to hear and see a bit of the Father’s response. He affirmed His love and expressed His pleasure and sent His Spirit. God’s voice has been recorded in the pages of the Bible. As we talk to Him, we can hear Him in Scripture affirm His love for us, and remind us of His good pleasure in saving us and in sending His Spirit to indwell us and to empower us to love and please Him. O, that we might give ourselves to pray to our God all the time that we might know the richness of communion with Him!
